The long history of the Erlhof & your hosts

Josef Brüggler family
After my apprenticeship and traveling years, the restaurant “Koperpot” in Krefeld (North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany), which I opened with my wife, was our first independent business.
The restaurant, which we successfully ran for 6 years, was at that time with 1 * in the Michelin Guide excellent. In December 1991, however, we went back to Austria and we successfully took over the “Hotel Bräu” in Lofer. We managed this historic business for 11 years 2 hoods level .
Since December 2002 I have been running mine together Mrs. Renate and mine Daughters Sonja and Kathrin the beautiful Erlhof. Sonja is an outstanding cook who was named Chef of the Year by Bertelsmann Verlag in 2013. She is a mainstay in my kitchen. Renate and Kathrin take care of a hearty service in the restaurant and the hotel.
The Chronicle:
The Erlhof was probably built around 1050. It is one of the oldest settlements on Lake Zell. The Erlhof is mentioned for the first time in 1137 in the Salzburg document book.
On November 8, 1151, Burgrave Hartnid gives the estate at Erlbach to the monastery of St. Peter as a “soul device” for his deceased wife.
They are followed by lords of castles and nobles in the order of ownership.
- In 1648 it was acquired by Christof Freiherr von Khuen – Belasy
- 1692 Georg Dietrich Khuen – Belasy.
- 1712 Vincent Auer
- 1741 Ruep Scheiber
- 1782 Johann Herzog
Countess Agathe von Breunner-Enckevoirth, bought the Erlhof around 1900. On January 14, 1911, their daughter Agathe Whitehead married Rittmeister Georg von Trapp.
Because their residence, the port city of Pula, was in a war zone during World War I, Agathe Whitehead-Trapp moved with her children to the Whitehead family’s summer home, the Erlhof in Thumersbach. The Trapp family lived there until about 1923.
Since 1974 the Erlhof has been owned by Dr. Hans Michel Piëch. In 1976 the house was renovated and converted into a traditional country hotel.
The Erlhof has been run by the Brüggler family as a family-run restaurant and country hotel since 2002.
